New Opera House

Illustration of New Opera House

Broadway between 39th and 40th Street
Seating capacity: 3045

This is the original Metropolitan Opera House, the "Old Met". The theater was severely damaged by fire in 1892 and redecorated many times. The last extensive redecoration was in 1903. This building was demolished in 1966. This was the nouveau riche venue of the robber barons. Within 3 years it put the "old guard" venue, the Academy of Music, out of business.
